Burma Ruby vs Mogok Spinel: A Dealer's Guide

When a client asks me for an important red stone, they almost always start with 'Burma Ruby'. I immediately tell them about Mogok Spinel. Once confused for ruby (even in crown jewels), spinel from the exact same region offers massive visual quality for a fraction of the price. The market is finally catching on.

Side-by-Side Comparison

FactorOption AOption B
Visual SignatureGlowing, intensely saturated pure red (often described as 'pigeon's blood'). Strong fluorescence.Explosively bright, singly refractive red. Often cleaner and more brilliant due to crystal structure.
Source GeographyThe Mogok Stone Tract, Myanmar (Burma). Extinct, legendary. The exact same Mogok Stone Tract. They are literally mined out of the same gravel.
Treatment BaselineAlmost universally heat-treated to improve color/clarity. Unheated stones carry massive premiums.Almost entirely untreated. They come out of the ground looking incredible.

Pricing Summary

Option A Range

$50,000 to $500,000+ per carat (Unheated 'Pigeon Blood')

Option B Range

$2,500 to $15,000 per carat (Natural/Untreated Red)

Why the difference? For centuries, ruby has simply been far more famous. The 'Big Three' (ruby, sapphire, emerald) cornered royal and institutional demand. A spectacular unheated Mogok ruby is astoundingly expensive. A spectacular unheated Mogok spinel is merely a significant purchase.

Who Should Buy What

You should buy Option A if...

The ultimate institutional buyer. The collector who only buys the absolute pinnacle of historical gemstone hierarchy and requires unheated AGL/SSEF papers confirming origin.

You should buy Option B if...

The smartest money in the room. The connoisseur who wants a world-class, untreated red gem that actually rivals a ruby visually but costs a fraction of the price.

Lawrence's Verdict

"This is the single best value argument I can make to a client. Right now, a superb 5-carat Mogok red spinel will outshine a 5-carat Burma ruby of equivalent price. Spinel prices are rising faster than almost any other stone because the secret is out. For the vast majority of my clients wanting red—spinel is the move."

Common Questions

Why isn't spinel more famous?

Because historically, nobody knew how to tell them apart. Many of the most famous 'rubies' in the world (like the Black Prince's Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown) are actually massive spinels.

Does a spinel need to be unheated?

It's the default. Spinels are very rarely heat-treated because heating generally doesn't improve them the way it does corundum (ruby/sapphire). You are almost always buying a natural, unenhanced stone.
