What Makes It Special

Fancy Yellow Diamonds are some of the most spectacular stones to hit the market. While traditional white diamonds drop in value as they show a tint of yellow, they dramatically reverse course as soon as the color saturation reaches the 'Fancy' grade territory. Whether the color is driven by nitrogen (common) or chromium (very rare), the difference between a 'Cape' yellow and a true 'Fancy Vivid' is visually stunning and financially significant.

Required Documentation

GIA Colored Diamond Grading Report
Appraisals
GIA Dossiers (for white diamonds only)

A GIA colored diamond grading report is non-negotiable for significant yellow diamonds. Heat treatments can artificially enhance yellow color, meaning the GIA report is heavily relied upon to identify untreated, natural color stones vs. treated material.

Dealer's Notes

1

Know your grades: A "Cape" yellow (the X-Y-Z range on a standard GIA report) is far lighter and less expensive ($3k-$8k/ct) than a true "Fancy Yellow" ($5k-$30k/ct) or "Fancy Vivid Yellow" ($30k-$100k+/ct).

2

Never buy a significant fancy colored diamond without a GIA Colored Diamond Grading Report.

3

Yellow diamonds almost always look deeply saturated when mounted in an 18k yellow gold cup or setting—they feed significantly off that metal. Keep this in mind if evaluating an unset stone versus a mounted one.

4

Pay extremely close attention to the cut. Fancy shape diamonds (like radiants or cushions) are cut specifically to deepen the face-up color saturation.

5

Check the GIA report for "Origin: Natural" to guarantee you aren't paying a premium for a heat-treated or irradiated stone.
